When my son was little, he was a Linus. He went everywhere with his favorite “Yucky Blankie.” Yucky started out as a nice white cotton blanket, but with love, ended up as a dingy, knotted ball of string. Once, I washed him (yes, him) and accidentally forgot to remove something red from the washer beforehand. When I pulled out the newly pink blanket, my daughter’s eyes twinkled with Lucy-like glee. Fortunately, a soak in hot water with bleach saved the day.
Like Linus, my son eventually outgrew his blanket, but Yucky Blankie was a faithful and true friend while he was needed. And when my son went to off to college, I was the one who needed him to have some type of security—even if it was only a blanket that I crocheted for him. So, if your Linus is also all grown up, you can find the pattern for the Rugby Striped Crochet Blanket here.
For those in search of a great pattern for their little Linus, or Linnea, the instructions for the the Rugby Striped Toddler Crochet Pattern can be found below this post and can be easily adapted to your preferred colors or yarn type.
Instructions
Blanket Measurements: approximately 31″ wide x 34″ long
Gauge: 16 double crochets (dc) in 4″ and 12 rows in 4″
G Crochet Hook 4.0 mm
Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton® Yarn 100 g skeins: 6 skeins* Navy (761-110), 2 skeins Denim (761-108G), and 2 skeins Silver (761-149B)
*Editor’s Note: I used approximately 504 g of Navy yarn, so if you were to make your blanket slightly smaller, you might be able to get away with using 5 skeins of Navy instead of 6.
For your starting chain (ch), crochet a multiple of 2 +1, and then add 1 turning chain. For my blanket, using Silver, I chained 118 + 1 for a total of 119 chains and added 1 turning chain.
Row 1 Continuing in Silver, I made 1 half double crochet (hdc) in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across for a total of 119 hdc.
Ch 1 and turn your work.
Row 2 Make 2 double crochet stitches (dc) in the first stitch, skip 1 stitch, and make 2 dc in the next stitch. Repeat the pattern of 2 dc followed by a skipped stitch across until you have made 59 pairs of 2 dc stitches. Skip the second to last stitch and make 1 dc in the last stitch of the row.
Ch 1 and turn your work changing colors to Navy.
Row 3 Make 2 dc stitches into each skipped stitch space for a total of 59 pairs of 2 dc stitches. Make 1 final dc stitch into the top of the last stitch of the row. Ch 1 and turn your work.
Continue as in row 3 using the following color scheme:
18 rows Navy (total)
2 rows Silver
6 rows Denim
2 rows Silver
18 rows Navy
2 rows Silver
6 rows Denim
2 rows Silver
18 rows Navy
2 rows Silver
6 rows Denim
2 rows Silver
18 rows Navy
1 row Silver
After completing the last row of the pattern, continue in Silver, ch 1, and turn your work. Hdc across. At the end of the row begin making the border.
The single crochet (sc) border is only made on each of the long sides of the blanket and not on the top and bottom. Start by making 3 sc stitches in the corner to turn and continue making evenly spaced sc stitches down the side finishing with 3 sc in the bottom corner. Join with an invisible join and fasten off.
Bring up a loop on the bottom corner of the opposite side and make 3 sc to form the corner. Continue up the side making evenly spaced sc stitches finishing with 3 sc in the top corner. Join with an invisible join and fasten off.
Weave in ends.
